ScarletKnight41
Oct 13 2005 04:36 PM

Well, I've never claimed to be the most observant Jew on the planet.

We go to temple on the high holidays. We fast for Yom Kippor. We don't eat bread during Passover. We light candles and say prayers before Friday night dinners when we're sitting down to dinner as a family on Fridays. We'll attend other holiday services, and the kids go to religious school.

We don't keep Kosher (we're Reform, so that's not an issue). We don't refrain from things like using cars or electricity during Shabbat. We tend not to go to temple services unless it's a holiday or other special occasion.

So we're more observant than some, more lax than others.

"Twenty. Five. Hundred."

"Last year was... twenty-five hundred, right?"

and then, when you do finally call me, and we figure out where you are, and i tell you then, to "ok, no problem. just stay on that road 'till you see a Shell gas station, turn right at the light, and call me" i also do not mean for you to call me ten minutes later, after you've blown by the turn a mile from that stoplight, have paid no attention to any of the likely geographical references i would give to guide you back, and are rapidly approaching the stop light near that railroad tunnel, from the other side.

and for the love of god, when i'm trying to give you directions to my house, and you're late and driving in unfamiliar territory, please do not put your wife on the phone, because she can barely understand the language, isn't driving, isn't going to be writing anything down, and, again, cannot understand a word i'm saying - which is kind of important when you're trying to convey the names of both geographical references and street names, dad.

...

i had a bitchy thanksgiving weekend. when you're giving complicated directions to a your house, and you say "do X, then call me [for further instructions]," you expect the wayfarer to call for further instructions, instead of, y'know, keep on driving, so as not to get lost.
