So with Piazza, Cairo & Mientkiewicz still banged up, any chance we'll put one of them on the 15-day DL and call someone else up to strengthen our bench?

Dougie hasn't played since June 5, so he could be back in business in just 10 days. Actually, we could even throw him in AAA on a rehab assignment to try and tune him up a bit. Cairo hasn't played since June 5 as well.

Brian Daubach has a 1.017 OPS in 175 ABs so far in AAA, and with our struggles at 1B, I don't see why we wouldn't call him up to help out a bit. At the very least, he's a power lefty off the bench for us--something we don't have now.

Defensively, he must be pretty bad, but we'll need a DH for nine games in about a week, and he'd certainly fit the bill there . . .

Aybar

Graves

It's kind of sad. With DeJean having come up empty earlier in yesterday's game, Aybar had a chance, if he pitched a clean mopup inning in the ninth, to possibly be retained when Graves was brought in. He spilled the bucket while mopping up, and his Met career is apparently over.

Is it me, or does Graves seem to have a really long neck? In fact, I'm looking at some tint changes in his neckflesh, and I'm going to call bullshit on this photo. Homey's cap isn't all that's been photoshopped. That whole torso belongs to another.

To another!

Daubach
Well, the long hoped-for promotion has come, but (1) it'll take more than BD to right the offense, and (2) if he hits, the Mets will have a tough choice to make in order to keep him up.

But, sometimes, one proactive move has unexpected positive repercussions. ¿Quien sabe?

Daubach (1) looks like a bad ass, and (2) is expected to wear 13, (a) the first Met to spit in the eye of Lady Luck since Matt Ginter, (b) the third such Met since Edgardo Alfonzo, and (c) a strong sign that a deal for the Fonz isn't really simmering.

Well, I've long advocated that the Mets remove some of their infield redundancy in favor of outfielders in order to better hit. Infield attriton forces them to do just that, but, in Gerald Williams, they add an outfielder who hits like an infielder.

And the primary purpose of his presence last season -- that he was their best backup in center, won't be true anymore once Cammy is ready, and I expect his butt to be ready by tomorrow.

So, no, I'm not sure what is going on.

Koo for Matsui brings the Korea/Japan rivalry even at one right now. If Seo returns before Matsui, things could swing in favor of the Koreans.

I don't know what the 40-man roster move is that was made in order to activate Jose Offerman, but it's almost certainly a transition of Bartolome Fortunato or Felix Heredia, surgery victims both, from the 15-day to the 40-day disabled list.

Offerman actually caught some time earlier this season with Philadephia, but was used mostly as a pinch-hitter, and the Mets sent him to extended spring training hoping to get him back in game shape.

The Mets now have eight disabled guys.

Gwreck
Aug 17 2005 11:04 PM

="Edgy DC"]No, I don't know why Zambrano is orange. It doesn't seem right, but earlier in the year, it was reported that the Mets still could option him down.

I'm convinced that he doesn't have options.

The explanation of "options" (courtesy Rob Neyer):

]"Options"
After three years as a pro, a player must be protected on a team's 40-man roster, or he is eligible for the Rule 5 draft (more on that later). Once he's served those three years, and assuming he is added to the 40-man roster, his club then has what are called "options" on him.

When a player is on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man Major League roster, he is on "optional assignment." One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be "optioned out" three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.

When you hear that a player is "out of options," that means he's been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he'll have to clear waivers (more on those below).

Zambrano's first pro season was 1996. Assuming he wasn't added to the D-Rays 40-man until 2001 (his first ML season), he'd be out of options after the 2003 season. Zambrano's record supports this - he was in the minors and majors in 2001-03, but starting in 2004 hasn't been in the minors.

The entire Neyer "Transactions Primer" (a must-read): http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html

smg58
Aug 17 2005 11:11 PM

Why can't they simply demote Santiago right now, as opposed to designating him for assignment? And is it me, or are DFA's happening a lot more often this year? Was there a rule change?

Edgy DC
Aug 17 2005 11:23 PM

Yeah, I know all that. It never made sense to me. It's only what I was told.

It's a moot point, though.

Frayed Knot
Aug 17 2005 11:25 PM

]he was in the minors and majors in 2001-03, but starting in 2004 hasn't been in the minors.

Are you sure about this? He looked to be pretty much a full-time ML player by '02 and I don't see any record of him as being in the minors since '01.
So perhaps if the TBDR didn't use all those options back when they were available it could explain why he still has some "leftover".

I think this is all moot anyway since I don't see him as minor legue bound anytime soon.

Gwreck
Aug 17 2005 11:30 PM

Frayed Knot wrote:

He pitched in 10 games for Durham in '02, and pitched one game in '03 fur Durham (not a rehabilitation assignment).

Source is the 2005 Sporting News Baseball Register (great book).

MFS62
Aug 18 2005 09:20 AM

The key is when a player has been added to the 40 man roster. IIRC, Zambrano started out his pro career as a position and was later converted to a pitcher. So, he may have spent more than three or four years in the minors, exposed to the RuleV draft, and nobody selected him before he made a 40 man roster. I didn't look at Zambrano's records, but this is a technically possible explanation.

And, about Neyer's piece. The rule was changed several years ago. I remember when teams could only option a player a total of three times - period. Not the possible yo-yo situation of today's game where a player could be sent down, then brought back up, several times a year (like Victor Diaz this year).

The Mets are no longer selfless.

I bring myself to watch: What's his uni #?

Edgy DC

The site doesn't know.

Write Annie and see if she recalls what he wore with Houston.

Edgy DC

ESPN, for what it's worth, has Self wearing 37.

It's not worth much, as that number is unavailable. I hope they didn't screw up and give him a retired number.

If he demanded 37, that would be very Selfish.

A minor injury to Matsui (which explains why he pulled up on a DP attempt the other day), and the Mets call up new Met number 24, or 23 depending on whether or not you count Todd Self.

Somebody text message Dickshot. The Mets homepage, which still doesn't have a number for Self, has Hernandez listed as number one, which he inherits from, most recently, Esix Snead, ending for now any speculation that the number was shelved while Mookie Wilson was still in uniform within the organization.

Has anyone heard whether Keppinger's leg is recovered enough to play Winter ball? If so, where will he be playing?

His minor league OBP numbers make me think he would be an effective #2 hitter. I see him being a Ron Hunt type of in-your-face, my-uniform-is-always-dirty, overachiever type of player. Comparing his baseball skills to Anderson Hernandez' tools is a discussion of the type that could keep the hot stove fires burning this winter.

And in a sorta' roster related question, doesn't Mo Vaughn's contract (counted for luxury tax purposes) also expire at the end of this season?
EDIT: Edgy, if you think this shouldn't be in this thread, please let me know. I'll make it a new thread.

I haven't heard anything about Keppinger either, and I'm just as curious as you are. His status would definitely influence how the Mets go about the offseason.

The Mets gave Vaughn, Leiter, and Rich Hidalgo buyouts of $2M apiece this offseason, plus paid $4.5M of Cedeno's salary, so that's over $10M in dead money they'll be freeing up this year.

Rotblatt

On 9/11/05, we recalled Keppinger, then placed him on the 60-day disabled list.

He was supposed to be ready to play in late August/early September, so either he had a setback; he's healthy and we used him to free up space on the 40-man roster purposes; or both.

I'd like to see how he does in Winter ball too. Gonna be a wild offseason. If we end up signing a FA who could be a starter but might not pan out (ala Mientkiewicz) at either 2B, 1B or C, the Spring will be really interesting, with Jacobs & Castro competing for starting jobs and Anderson Hernandez & Keppinger competing for bench spots. If we don't trade Cameron, we'll also have Diaz competing for a starting job.

Lots of controversy for the daily rags to stir up, and lots of fans like me ready and willing to be their patsy.

I really, really hope Yankee fans are having similar discussions in four days.

From what I saw of Kepp last year, he could be a good little ballplayer. He was hitting over 300 in AAA and makes contact which could be useful for our lineup. If we can rid ourselves of Matsui, 2b could be an interesting competition between Kepp and Hernandez, or a platoon type situation.

Does anyone really know why Jacobs is not catching? Correct me if I am wrong, but in combing his numbers between AA and Mets, he has 30 hr and 110+ rbi and .290 avg?

With a lack of FA catchers, isn't Jacobs is a cost-efficient, internal, productive solution?

Does anyone feel Helton is a realistic goal for the offseason? If we are going to pursue a 1b, why not pursue the best.

A shoulder injury in 2004 pretty much ended Jacobs hopes of being an ML catcher.

Helton's contract is way too much to take on. I don't know the exact figures, but I think it is somethng like $18 mil/yr for next 6 years.

Please, no. He has an albatross of a contract and is on the wrong side of 30.

Frayed Knot

Yeah, Jacobs wasn't considered much of a defensive catcher even before he hurt his shoulder in early '04. He then missed most of that season and spent most of this one at 1B & DH. I wouldn't count on him returning behind the dish on anything other than a limited-use basis.

I'm not sure what to make of Keppinger. His BA has been good - both in '04 when we got him and this year before the injury - but he doesn't tack a whole lot of walks/OBP onto that avg, hits for almost no power, and isn't really considered a defensive standout either. I think Met fans like this guy - or at least like the idea of him - a lot more than the scouts & touts crowd does.

You mean the famous Joe Randa "Wasn't he a Met?" Memorial Roster Spot?
