Best Bench Ever?

Aug 21 2005 09:20 AM

How sick has this bench been this year? They've made Willie look great:

Marlon Anderson 17-40 (.425), 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 8 R
Jose Offerman (*) 8-27 (.296), 1 HR, 6 RBI
Miguel Cairo 5-10 (.500), 1 RBI
Chris Woodward 4-8 (.500), 1 HR, 3 RBI

Three PHs each from Valent & Matsui
Ice is 2-7 with 2 runs scored
Daubach had a pinch-hit homer and a double in six ABs
Piazza has a two-run double in three ABs
Castro is 1-1 with an RBI double

(*) I'm not 100% sure on Offerman's stats... I did a quick count from his game-by-game log since he got called up from games where he had one at-bat. Not all of those might have been PH appearances.

TEAM TOTALS: 47-140, .336 avg (1st in ML), .394 obp (4th), .443 slg (5th), .836 ops (5th). Not much on XBH (3 doubles, 4 HR), but they're definitely hitting.

I don't remember recent times when I've had as much confidence in this bench as a whole. In late innings, I look forward to these guys coming to the plate, because I know something exciting is going to happen. I don't want Woodward in right field every day, or Marlon Anderson standing at first base, but I love having these guys in reserve, ready to go.

I have been pleasantly surprised all year by Dumbo and Co. We need to keep this bench together (something you don't usually hear).

We can't call one of our guys Dumbo. Dumbo is Jorge Posada, because of his big ears (You'll believe a catcher can fly....).

Very nice bench.
Needs a power hitter, though.
The problem is, I wish the regulars were healthier/ better so we wouldn't have had to see so much of them.

And here's where I will admit that I was wrong about Marlon Anderson. He has been much better than I ever thougth he'd be.
How do I cook this crow?
