2006 25-Man Roster

Edgy DC
Oct 03 2005 01:19 PM

This is not a prediction of who will be on the opening day roster in 2006, but merely who is currently at the head of the line. Many of these players will be gone. Others will be added. Many (Bannister and Petit, for instance) are scheduled to arrive in 2006, but are not right now on track to make the opening-day roster, though they could. The idea is to track the expected roster as it develops.

Good work,Bert Hernandez and Marlon Anderson have both expressed a desire to come back, I guess the future on Solor is bleak?

Argue if you must for Marlon, but there were way too many veteran reserve infielders on the 2005 Mets. Next year, I'll not have it.

NEW YORK METS_Purchased the contract of RHP Danny Graves from Norfolk of the IL. Released RHP Lino Urdaneta.

Somebody tell the Mets that when they release a guy from their roster, they should release him from the website. No more Lino. Great this is evolving already.

Roster-making really heats up in the reshuffling leading up to the Rule V Draft.

I don't know what the status of Moreno is, but he's not on the 40-man roster.

I can tell you Orber Aquiles Moreno is married to Marjorie; they have one child, Maria (8-8-96).

Edgy DC

I don't know of any new info.

It's an interesting case. Cubas get suspended by the MLBPA, but do they feel obliged to provide Soler with a good lawyer? Will an immigration lawyer with the Mets and one with the union be working at cross-purposes.

Is the contract still valid? If not, what's the guy living on?

I'd really not only like to have them keep the core of the team together, which they are obviously doing, but I'd also think it'd be valuable to include Marlon, Douggy (just cause he's a pro and another lefty), Woodward, and Cairo in future plans too.

Welcome, Honky.

I think Mientkiewicz is as good as gone; I don't know whose fiancee he boinked, but he was the forgotten man when he came back from that injury. And I would rather see Tim Teufel at second base than Miguel Cairo anywhere near Shea Stadium in '06.

valadius - "By the way, Joe Hietpas has a scary resemblance to Al Leiter."

I hope the resemblance doesn't carry through to when Hietpas steps in the batter's box with a bat in his hands.

Edgy - "Argue if you must for Marlon, but there were way too many veteran reserve infielders on the 2005 Mets. Next year, I'll not have it."

Anderson and Woodie are keepers. Cairo and Offerman should be sent as far from Shea as possible. Gerald Williams may not be an infielder, but he needs to accompany Cairo and Offerman on their journey somewhere else.

Edgy DC
Oct 04 2005 10:48 PM

Gerald Williams is an outfielder with an infielder's bat. Who knows what his future holds.

To me, the key spot is the one Self is sitting in right now. Willie seems loathe to force a reserve outfielder to play first or force a reserve firstbaseman to play outfield. Too long has he forced middle infielders into both those spots. They must find a guy --- perhaps Self himself --- who can back up both at first and the outfield, and so --- with the pitching staff eating up 48% of the roster the way it does these days --- squeeze another professional hitter onto the roster, rather than another glove guy.

In my world, yes. In my world, Victor would Kevin Mitchell himself all over the diamond.

In Willie's world, I do not know.

He openly speculated about using Jacobs in the outfield occasionally, which is a good sign.

Good point. I was just asking if you thought Jake has enough speed to play the outfield.

Don't know. But I think he's got enough bat to cover for any but the most egregious of gaits.

I think getting batsmen in the lineup should be a higher priority.

And that is one thing we've agreed on all along.
But I still have mental images of Norm Siebern playing left field in Yankee staduim running through my mind. And that brown grassless area in left field at DC staduim where Frank Howard patrolled - it wasn't that big, a testimony to his limited range.
If playing the outfield is what it would take to keep Jake's bat in the lineup, so be it. He would probably drive in more than he lets in. But I'd prefer someone with a modicum of speed.

Its the end of the World Series blackout for annuncing moves. This morning, I heard on ESPN radio that the Mets officially announced that Danny Graves' contract will not be renewed, so I thought I'd bump this thread up.

Teams have a two week free shot at resigning their players who would be eligible for free agency. Have we resolved the question about whether or not Woodward signed a two year contract last year?

And, about Graves - I would guess many Mets fans treated that news with the same emotion as finally passing a kidney stone.

Later

A $500,000 buyout is a good payday. Sad to see him go. His may be the last good Mets mullet for a while.

Graves is already listed as a "potential free agent." I guess I can change all the potentials to actuals even though Graves and Anderson are the only ones to declare so far.

12:08 AM EDT... News: Piazza Officially a Free Agent
Associated Press.
Mike Piazza officially filed for free agency.

Also of note, the Mets declined the $5 million option for Danny Graves, electing, instead, to pay the $500,000 buyout making him a free agent…

Marlon Anderson also filed for free agency…

Also eligible to become free agents are Braden Looper, Steve Trachsel, Miguel Cairo, Roberto Hernandez, Felix Heredia, Doug Mientkiewicz, Jose Offerman and Gerald Williams…

Looper, Trachsel, Mientkiewicz and Heredia all have 2006 options, which can be exercised by the team…

…it is widely believed the team will pass on all options except Trachsel’s, which is for &7 million…

Didn't we hear somewhere that Trachsel's option was for $2.5 million?

I thought that $2.5 was pretty low. It seems more likely that his option would be for 7.

smg58
Oct 28 2005 10:08 AM

Has Woodward passed six full seasons as a major leaguer? To put it another way, was he a free agent last year because he had reached six seasons, or was he non-tendered? That would matter because if he hasn't reached six years, then the Mets would still control him even if he's not under contract.

Frayed Knot
Oct 28 2005 10:14 AM

I'd be surprised if Woodward was inked to a 2-year deal. What would have been the point in that?
What is quite possible is that he's not a FA because he doesn't have his full 6 years in yet. He's played in pieces of 7 seasons but that might not add up to 6 full.

*(opps - cross-posted with smg58)

Trachsel's option is probably for a $2.5 minimum but could be as much as $7+ with incentives and stuff. I heard last night that he was among the early group filing for FA-gency.

About Soler- I used Google and Yahoo search, and got lots of hits, but no specific contract terms.

I think I had read that when he defected his initial deal with his old agent called for him to sign a major league contract. Since that time, he has been on the restricted list, which I think is a major league only vehicle for players already under contract.

The new "official" contract he just signed is estimated at 3 years, $2.0+ million. None of the articles I found specify whether this one was a major or minor league contract. But at those bucks, his age, and the similarity with featured Cuban exile players, I would think its a major league deal.

We'll know when the rosters have to be finalized prior to the Rule V Draft.

But this may be a unique situation. His suspension doesn't stsrt until the first 10 games of next season, so he's no "oficially" suspended until then. It could have roster implications when the Mets have to protect some youngsters from the Rule V Draft. That's why I asked.

I'm not sure if this is because he signed a two year deal last year, or if he doesn't have the requisite time in the majors to be eligible for free agency. He may just be arbitration eligible, but still Met property.
Do you have a source I may not have seen?

Edgy DC

Two ways to trigger a wrap. One is to put a break (br) tag everywhere you want the imaginary carriage to return. The other --- and easier --- way is to set the width of the cell to the width of the image or smaller (td width=90).

Edgy, saw this posted on NYFO. No link provided:

Added pitchers Brian Bannister, Anderson Garcia, Henry Owens, Yusmeiro Petit and Juan Perez to the 40-man roster; sent outright outfielders Ambiorix Concepcion and Todd Self to Norlfolk of the International League (AAA).

Juan Perez is a 27 year old lefty reliever who pitched for Pawtucket last season.
But who is Henry Owens?

Later

Edgy DC
Nov 18 2005 09:16 PM

Owens was nabbed from Pittsburgh in last year's rule V draft. He spent the year at St. Lucie and did well (which he should have at 26) and went to the AFL went Jeremy Hill got hurt. He's a hard-thrower, fastball-sinker-slider guy.

Huge step backwards for Concepcion, that he's considered a safer exposure than stalled guys like Baldiris and Lydon.

mlbaseballtalk
Nov 18 2005 09:38 PM

Well it could just be the Ron Darling Tribute spot for Benson

Course we could find 25 guys to fill various "slots"

Right now we no longer have the Stearns/Carter/Hundley/Piazza tribute "Clutch Power Hitting Catcher Who Lead The Team" slot

Wright is the "HoJo Tribute Third Sacker With Pop and Potential" slot

Aaron Heilman gets the "Rick Augliera Tribute Pitcher Without A Real Specific Slot Slot" and so on

Steve

mlbaseballtalk
Nov 18 2005 10:03 PM

Actually, to be fair, lets give Tom Glavine the "Warren Spahn Memorial Future Hall Of Famer Hanging On For Another Go Round Roster Spot"

Shouldn't be a frequently used one, and maybe a case can be made that Glavine can have a "Clemens-esque" resurgence and stick around a long while, but it is a good slot to use, especially for pitchers

Steve

Edgy DC
Nov 21 2005 09:11 AM

Roster at mets.com shows the addition of Bannister, Garcia, Henry Owens, and Petit, but not Perez and not the removal of Concepcion and Self.

They also finally include Humber, show a retention of Woodward (suggesting the Mets do indeed control his rights), and include only 36 guys, indicating that there isn't currently a roster crunch that would force them to remove Self and Concepcion.

On edit: Oops, here's a reference to Perez.

If Edgy decides to so name that spot, I would hope that it would be retired after Glavine leaves and not become a permanant slot on the Mets roster. Why should the Mets be looking at pitchers that old as a permanent fixture on their staff?

I would give the Tommie Agee Memorial Forceful, Fleet, and Fun Outfielder Roster Slot to Floyd. He's not as fleet as Beltran, but he can move. And he seems more fun. Beltran is wooden and cliched. Floyd makes Wright carry his luggage around and does silly little hopping multiple step-handshakes that show he still thinks he's David's age.

I think the Tommie Agee slot has to go to a guy with mad gamebreaking fence-busting athletic skilz. In my imagination, it was established in upon Agee's death in the 2001 offesason, and was held by Jay Payton until he was dealt at the end of 2002, but the chair remained sketchily filled until the Cameron acquisition. It seems like it should go primarily to centerfielders, but Cammie retained it in his shift to right because it would have been unseemly otherwise.

On the notion that it must be perpetually filled, it was given to Jeromy Burnitz at the end of 2002 and passed on to Tsuyoshi Shinjo upon Burnitz's dealing in 2003. Cammie has restored the shining brilliance of of the honor.

I hope Delgado is ready for the Clendonon patch on his sleeve.

Just for the sheer hell of it, the Tug slot:

Naturally the guy wearing Tug's old number is the first holder, Johnny B. Goode Franco. You know, this years pen corps is pretty bland, even though he isn't a reliever (though I can see the thought down the road during the last year of the deal making him a closer if he seems to be wearing down) I'd say Pedro "held" it before Takatsu.

In fact, maybe we should change it to Memorial Goofy Pitcher Roster Slot and give it to the rightfull holder, Pedro Martinez! I mean Tug did start his career as a starter!

Steve

I think goofy reliever is the more compelling (and particular) tradition --- McDowell, Wendell, Myers, Kook. It's a good tradition with a lot of pedigree (as shown) even before the passing of Tug.

OK, whoever thought that by by opening up talks with wayward relievers was somehow distracting the Mets braintrust from moving on more important stuff was dead wrong. Today the Mets introduced an All-Star slugging firstbaseman, signed an All-Star reliever, and added a reserve outfielder as a side dish. This looks like it packs the 40 for now, so any subsequent acquisitions may or may not include subtracting the excess starting pitching.

A Met day that may well long be talked about, one way or another.

I'm assuming a paper demotion of Hernandez over Keppinger for the time-being as Keppinger has had more big-league experience and success. Obviously, Hernandez's greater versatility will provide him an edge of his own. We'll see how it shakes out.

Also to be seen is how well they can photoshop the Mets insignia onto Redman's squashed cap. Will they foreshorten the insignia or expand the peak?

At any rate, I did find a note about Takatsu filing for free agency. So we move on. And suddenly the Mets relief corps is looking a little thin. Welcome back to the bigs, um, Bartolome Fortunato.

This has greater implications, as Wagner inherits the McGraw slot. Yeah, he's dry, but he's short, he's a lefty, he raises llamas, and he's the closer. And his dryness can be funny, too, if you let it.

I'm not going to add Valentin to the expected roster just yet, as he's not on the 40 and still has to show something, but obviously his signing means bad news for Anderson Hernandez and Jeff Keppinger, as Valentin enters into a competition with the two of them for one spot, and he doesn't have options.

It's also conceivable that Woodward's spot isn't guaranteed etiher.

By definition a Rule 5 guy is automatically on not only the 40 but on the 25-man also.
If he is removed from the 25 at any time during this season he has to be offered back to the Giants for half the price we paid for him (50K I believe).

OK, Franco is on the roster is on the roster and almost certain to open the season as a Met. So it looks like there'll be no room for a potential battle betwen Keppinger and Hernandez for a roster spot. In fact the only battle right now looks to be between Jose Valentin and Tike Redman. If Valentin wins (and he looks to have the upper hand as soon as he shows that seems healthy), the Mets will be carrying only four outfielders... again. And I don't like that.

Damn veterans and their guaranteed salaries ruin the jockying of spring training.

Oh, well, the pitching staff is far from set.

The stupid-ass Mets/MLB site is driving me crazy, because they also put Concepcion back on the roster which is contrary to reports and also have Valentin there, who was reported to have been signed to a minor-league dealie. Even if both designations were true, that would give the Mets 42 guys on their 40-man roster. I'm going to assume both designations are false for now. I should probably consider the Self/Keppel exchange to be wrong, but I already pasted them in.

I miss Gold Glove and his MLB roster site.

Why is the battle between Redman and Valentin? Why isn't it between Woodward and Valentin? Or Valentin and the rarely used 12th pitcher? Woodward and Valentin would seem redundant, especially since Woody isn't needed as a RH backup 1B or backup OF. I'd rather see Woody than someone without a real role in the bullpen, like Fortunato.

Edgy DC
Dec 11 2005 01:51 PM

What is it? You want Woodie fighting for his life even though you want him above the competitors.

This isn't really a picture of what I want, just where the team seems to be at. (An if-the-season-started-today kind of thing.) I dislike twelve pitchers. I'm not keen on eleven. But twelve has been the way they've gone the last few years, through three managers and three GMs.

MFS62
Dec 11 2005 02:39 PM

Maybe that's one of the reasons why there have been three managers and three GMs.

Later

Nymr83
Dec 11 2005 03:02 PM

in the NL an extra bench player is likely to see more time than an extra pitcher is. 12 pitchers is usually a bad idea, though there are times where its a good idea (you have no offdays and a scheduled doubleheader coming up, you have a starter injured but not on the DL so you're keeping his replacement around)

I'm listing Oliver as a reliever, though obviously he might land in Norfolk's starting rotation. The unretired types are tricky, because if they pitch reasonably well in the minors and don't get a call, they stand ready to quit. If they don't pitch very well, rather than fight to retain their spot, they tend to quit then also.

He's married with two kids, so that gives him less motivation to fight the good fight.

Let's see if Felicano's goofball Alexi Lalas Art Howe-era super-goatee survives Randolph.

Parra has a chance to finish what he started. If not for a concentrated run of rotten luck, he might be sitting in Padilla's chair.

I was looking for a picture of Parra and then recalled that I still had one on my site from his last tenure. Best picture I found while searching for "Jose Parra":

The Mets offered contracts yesterday to three arbitration-eligible players: the utility man Chris Woodward, catcher Ramon Castro and pitcher Victor Zambrano, ensuring that they remained with the team next season. Yesterday was the deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players, who would have otherwise become free agents.

The Mets did not tender major league contracts to pitcher Tyler Yates and outfielder Wayne Lydon, removing them from the 40-man roster.

Yeah, the Mets site has removed them as well. Keppel and Self also, who appear to be a few weeks too late in leaving.

More conspicuously, they have Valentin on the big league roster. If that's true, they already have three backup infielders (Franco, Valentin, and Woodie) all but guaranteed a slot. That leaves Redman et al. to fight for a fifth outfield slot against each other, the candidates for the 12th pitcher, and the Mets.

With the presence of too many guys under major league contracts, plus the necessity of having two guys to back up second, third, and short, the Mets look pretty set offense-wise. There'll probably be a something of a contest over the second reserve infielder slot. I suppose, if he has no options, Redman could still knock Diaz off, but I doubt it.

Nobody else available to displace, Chavez's spot has to come at the expense of the twelfth pitcher, who ---- by virtue of being a righthander and missing last season --- is Bartolome Fortunato.

You keep that up and you'll have to spin off a new thread about "what is Fred Astaire's uniform number?"

Therefore, let's keep the calling off off.

Later

Edgy DC
Jan 10 2006 10:31 AM

Now you saw that coming, didn't you Elster?

We'll double check on the Tejeda-Tejada conundrum. I'm sticking six reievers in there right now because, as far as know, only four batters have options --- Reyes, Matsui, Wright, and Diaz --- and none of them are likely to go down to make way for reliever number seven. Diaz could go down for one, but I don't think the information we have now projects that.

What I fear more is that Tike Redman perhaps having no options, and therefore getting carried over Diaz. That would be unfortunate.

Elster88
Jan 10 2006 10:33 AM

I think my first question got lost in the shuffle. Is it possible for any of the free agents to be brought back to the team before May (or whatever month is in the rule)?

I play it pretty much the same way when I record the comings and goings on the UMDB.

There's no exit for Piazza and the others yet, even though the Mets have severed the connection. There's still the extremely unlikely possibility that they'll resign with the Mets on or after May 1.

couldn't Redman be carried over Chavez? They fulfill the same function: LHed CFer.

I'd really like to see Heath Bell get a serious look. If he outpitches Bradford and Padilla (and the other RHed middle guys), he should get the job.

Yeah, Bradfrod is defniitely ahead of Bell on salary and Padilla ahead of him on 2005 performance.

Vic Sage
Jan 10 2006 11:42 AM

Well, if Bradford's guaranteed, then Bell is competing against Padilla, Parra, shmoll, wylie and fortunato for that RHed slot. I still think he's got more upside than any of them.

as for chavez, redman and diaz: they need to keep one of the LHed CFers, not both. And if Diaz is traded, its because Nady made him expendable and because Diaz has the most trade value of this little group.

I'd have preferred they signed Preston Wilson for RF (he's a homeboy! and could've backed up CF), and traded Diaz or Nady as part of a package to upgrade our starting pitching.

Does anybody have any info on these relievers:

Anderson Garcia
Henry Owens
Juan Perez

and how did they came to be on the 40?

Edgy DC
Jan 11 2006 11:55 AM

Added before the Rule V draft as their stock was rising.

Owens is an apparently late-blooming righthander who has consistently struck out over 12 per nine. This year at St. Lucie he retarded his walk rate somwhat and got an invite to the AFL after an injury opened up a slot. The Mets got him in the minor league version of the Rule V draft a few yars back. He's relieved exclusively.

Anderson Garcia was part of the Yankee price for Armando Benitez and had a Jeckle-and-Hyde year (I think) for Bingo in 2005, finishing with a 4.97 ERA. I think the second half was the good part, for what that's worth.

Can't tell you much about Perez.

OK, a week or so since the Pelfrey signing and the Mets site still shows 41 men on the 40-man roster, so I'm concluding that Ring is indeed no longer on the 40, but I'm still including him as the favorite in a wide open field to make the Mets out of camp as he still appears to be second on the organizational depth chart among relieving lefties.

Is it me, or does Schmoll have one sloppy looking cut-and-paste job going for a Mets hat? At least they didn't cut his head off like they did to poor Danny Graves.

Wagner inherited the mantle from Shngo Takatsu --- primarily based on (a) being the top dog, (b) being a lefty, and (c) hanging out with these:

Iriki

Ring
The Mets have a couple of different types of roster crunches here. Firstly, with the addition of Iriki, their site has 42 guys on the 40-man roster. Frayed Knot suggested, probably correctly, that Ring was incorrectly placed there, after having previously been reported to have been exposed during the Rule V draft. But who else should be removed now that Iriki is on the roster? I'm guessing Fortunato, but I've heard nuttin'.

Second, squeezing Iriki in there (and I assume they signed him to take him north), means squeezing out either Padilla, who is hard to lock out after last year's performance, or Ring, the current best candidate for the second lefty out of the bullpen/LOOGy role. I dumped ring, as his non-roster status says they Mets aren't as serious about him as some others, lefty or no.

Third, such a bullpen arrangement also has no rooom for Mitch Wylie, who the Mets have to carry on the 25 if they are to retain him.

Fourth, there is also the conflict of carrying Victor Diaz, who --- while no Kevin Mitchell --- certainly suggests he deserves to be carried no matter what kind of spring he has, over Tike Redman, who is out of options and fills a role very similar to that of Endy Chavez.

In short, there's not a lot of versatility the way the Mets have it set up. They have three young secondbaseman on the verge, but, in signing three veteran infield reserves to major league contracts, left no room for any of them.

None of this matters a tike, though, if they're willing to put guys through waivers and accept any risk that entails.

Baldiris
Seems to be like Fortunato would have been a better stealth choice, as he's missed a year, and nobody has health reports on him but the Mets. But I think the general wisdom in such cases is position players are easier to sneak through because there are always teams with openings for pitchers.

It's a shame (with his cool name and all), but in the last year and a half three guys have passed him on the depth chart, and, in it's way, this allows them playing time for all three this year.

Still, Iriki better be worth it. HIs song is worth the 750 Gs, but costing them Baldiris will take something more. And don't say a rap, because that won't do it.

Angel Pagan has been acquired by the Chicago Cubs.

Johnny Dickshot
Jan 26 2006 07:08 AM

Looks like they traded Pagan and are sneaking Redman to add Maine.

]Tike Redman has been designated for assignment to make room for pitcher John Maine, acquired in the Kris Benson trade, on the 40-man roster. The Mets will need to pass Redman through waivers in order to keep him.

Also, the team traded minor-league outfielder Angel Pagan to the Cubs for cash considerations. Pagan, 24, hit .271 with eight homers, 40 RBI and 27 stolen bases last season at Triple-A Norfolk. He had been designated for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot for Japanese pitcher Yusaku Iriki.

Players I Think Have Been Re-Assigned or Released, but I Can't Find Any Report Saying So:

Pitchers:
Bryan Edwards
Willie Collazo
Blake McGinley

Infielders:
Michel Abreu
Basak
Juan Castro
Jose Coronado
Chase Lambin
Hector Pellot
Corey Ragsdale
Leivi Ventura

Outfielders:
Corey Aldridge
Carlos Gomez
Fernando Martinez

Edgy, this is the last move I read about.

Mets reassigned RHP Jeremi Gonzalez to minor league camp; optioned RHP Bartolome Fortunato and RHP Mike Pelfrey to minor league camp.

I've noticed the names of Ragsdale, Basak and Lambin in box scores earlier this week. When Reyes played his forst game since returning from the WBC, he pnly played a few innings. I think Lambin took over for him at short.

EDIT: Edgy, the only other move I could find was Padilla being put on the official 60 day DL.

it looks like you're projecting Bannister over Iriki on the roster, and over Heilman in the rotation, and the non-roster Feliciano over RRing.

I don't think it'll work that way, due to roster and contract issues, but it wouldn't be the worst thing they could do.

I think that, since they signed Iriki to a guaranteed contract, and he hasn't pitched badly, he'll be in the pen, and Heilman will be in the rotation. Especially since Bannister can be sent back down without any issues. And i don't think they'll try to move somebody off the 40-man (do they run the risk of losing a player thru waivers that way?) to clear room for Feliciano, when Ring has done okay and is already on the roster.

Edgy DC
Mar 27 2006 03:46 PM

Yeah, I only just now switched it to Bannister and Feliciano making the team, based on the consensus of speculation the last few days. Up until then, I had Iriki and Ring, based on "roster and contract issues." But none of those are crippling and the watchers seem to think that Bannister is close to having this squad made.

Iriki and the Mets didn't sign on with each other to strengthen the Norfolk Tides, so I'm dubious too, yeah.

MFS62
Mar 27 2006 03:47 PM

They can send Rule V draftee Wylie back to his original team to make room for Feliciano.
Anyone else cut from the 40 man roster has to go through waivers.

Wylie, as is his right, refused a minor league assignment and became a free agent.

The Mets offered him back to the Giants but they said no.

Goodbye, Mitch Wylie.

Bret Sabermetric
Mar 28 2006 07:17 AM

I'm prepared to be amazed if Bannister makes the final cut, which would contradict what I've been claiming about the Mets' intransigence in promoting minor leaguers with options who have good STs at positions where they obviously could use quality players.

Shockingly, it's starting to look like that's going to happen. Of course, I'm not convinced it's a good idea, because Heilman's been dominant as a starter since winter league play. Dude has 11 K's, 0 BB in 14 innings this spring to go along with his 1.29 ERA.

I'm not sure what the answer is, though, since Bannister's 2005 & his ST this year are pretty darn good--he clearly deserves a shot. Normally, I'd call for Zambrano to go to the pen, but he's been good this spring, and he's even had good control, allowing only 2 walks in 11 innings.

Trachsel's struggled, but I think he's too valuable to DFA, and I don't think we can afford to trade him, as that would give us zero pitching depth.

I suppose we could put Trachsel in the pen and plan on using him in relief of Petey after every Petey start (thus giving him enough time to get warmed up), but that's kind of retarded.

I dunno. Not a bad problem for us to have, though.

Edgy DC

MFS62

Marty Noble on Mets.com reports that Milledge, Self, Redman and Sandy Martinez are all officially now in Minor-league camp and Matsui is officially on the DL, retroactive to March 18 (eligible to come off April 8).

My crystal ball reports that the roster is all but locked in, with 3 possible scenarios (in projected order of liklihood):

A: Diaz comes north with either Feliciano or Oliver. Roster crunch probably sends Anderson Hernandez (or possibly Diaz) back to Norfolk when Matsui comes off the DL.

B1 Both Feliciano and Oliver come north, Diaz to AAA. Anderson Hernandez back to AAA when Matsui comes back.

B2. Both Feliciano and Oliver come north, Diaz to AAA. One of the pitchers to AAA when Matsui comes back

Matsui could come back and head to extended spring training or a rehab assignment also.

I'm not sure, but I think that Bannister will be the first USC Trojan to appear in a regular season game for the Mets since Tom Seaver in 1984. If only Bret Boone hadn't lost the passion.

According to the suspicions of many Poolers, Barry Zito will be next.

MFS62

The other Trojan who came to mind was Dave Kingman. But he was released in January 1984.

Bret Sabermetric
Mar 31 2006 05:16 PM

Christ, Elster, Lima hasn't gotten anyone out all spring and Diaz hit quite well in ST (and in MLB previously) and it came down to the wire. It's a total no-brainer, as far as I'm concerned. Though I'm glad the Mets will bring VD north.

My guess is that Oliver takes Feliciano's spot because he's seen as an emergency starter if Zambrano can't go because (1) they want to get Heilman into his relief role and/or (2) they don't want to (again) be giving him a starting spot and taking it away from him.

Mets: "When I give my heart, Aaron, it will be completely."

The good news for Keppinger is that the entire taxi squad is currently pitchers, except for him.

A whole bunch of other guys got re-assigned to other outposts, or perhaps cut free. You'll hear more about it in the coming days, but not necessarily from this space, which will stick to the 40. Off-seasons are Hell for this thread.

Well, considering that headed into ST most fans wanted:
* an 11, rather than 12, man pitching staff
* Diaz to make the roster over one of the light-hitting speedster types - even if he didn't get the starting job
* and a young pitcher rather than Lima to make the staff if he proved good enough in ST

Check, Check & Check ... meaning things aren't too bad if all we're complaining about is minor differences in which LOOGY has the (possibly temp) assignment.

Edgy DC

Yup, many fears of stupidity didn't come to pass. The Mets even flirted with batting Beltran second.

And, who knows, Steve Traschel threw five scoreless in his last tuneup.

The stupidity is in that we went from seven starters to Bannister starting Game 2.

I'd guess it was triggered by the lack of innings we got from Trachsel and Bannister the last two days. It probably makes sense to have an additional arm available against Atlanta.

My hope is that Matsui will displace Valentin, and when they decide to go back to one fewer pitcher, that Diaz would replace Julio.

If the hamstring strain Brian Bannister suffered Wednesday causes the rookie pitcher to be assigned to the disabled list, and if Carlos Beltran still feels unable to play Friday when the Mets open their series in Atlanta, the Mets probably will promote a position player from the Minor Leagues for at least four games.

That player will not be Lastings Milledge, general manager Omar Minaya said Wednesday. It could be Victor Diaz, who has not been hitting productively in Triple-A since he was demoted April 17.

The player promoted probably would be returned to the Minor Leagues on Tuesday if the club needs to promote a pitcher -- John Maine, Jose Lima or Jeremi Gonzalez -- to replace Bannister. Maine is the only one of the three on the 40-man roster.

The Mets won't know enough to make a decision about Bannister until Thursday, if then. He is to be re-evaluated in Atlanta. He said he never had a hamstring injury, so he has nothing to judge this one against.

"It might just be a real bad cramp," he said.

"The best thing is that's it's not in the worst place -- high or low. It's in the middle of the muscle."

Jesus, I hope it's not Lima. I think he'd get bitch slapped in the bigs.

Maine's been throwing alright. I'd prefer Iriki, who somewhat bizarelly isn't included in that article, but he'd have to be re-placed on the 40 man.

Maine hasn't been striking many out, which is a bit troubling, especially since I don't think he's a ground-ball pitcher. Still, he hasn't been walking many either and could probably fill in adequately in a pinch.

Gwreck
Apr 27 2006 01:29 AM

The 15 extra spots on the 40-man seem to be pretty crowded these days. My guess is Maine would get the call, unless they think Darren Oliver can make the start.

I was surprised when Feliciano got called up and they had to try to sneak Iriki through waivers. Not sure who'd they be willing to risk with the need to add someone else to the 40 man -- my guesses would be 1. Fortunato and 2. Juan Perez (??)

Possibly. Willie was just interviewed on M&MD. He said he wants to keep Oliver in the pen and believes someone will be brought up to start in Bannister's spot. He mentioned Maine and someone else(forgot but a non-40 man guy) and then added Lima. He then intimated that Lima hasn't been doing that well. I got the impression Willie wouldn't be too thrilled if it is Lima.

Today's Daily News reported that the Mets have released Todd Self.

Considering the fact that he was batting .108 with no home runs, I guess you could say this was self-inflicted.

This creates a spot on the 40 man roster. Since Jose Lima was pulled from his last start after pitching two scoreless innings, does this mean it might be Lima Time at Shea this Sunday?

Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter.

Edit: Edgy's list shows he wasn't on the Mets' 40 man roster. But it makes room on the Norfolk roster for recently signed Jose Offerman.
(But I still like my "self-inflicted" line anyhow.)

BTW there are a few simillarities between Mr. Agee and Mr. Beltran. Both considered "5 Tool Athletes" both won the ROY in the AL, both arrived with great promise thrust upon them.

Hell, I wasn't thinking about it in my CPF Song parody of Hotel Flushing with the Beltran signing that it might actually be a case of "...we haven't had that kind of spirt here since, Nine-teen Sixty-Nine..."

I think so. If I'm reading Rob Neyer's transations primer right:

]When you hear that a player is "out of options," that means he's been on the 40-man roster during three different seasons, beginning with his fourth as a pro, and to be sent down again he'll have to clear waivers

Bell has been in the majors in 2004 and 2005, so this is definetly his 3rd season on the 40 man.

He's been a Mets farmhand since 1998. Hard to belive, but he's been at Norfolk since 2002.

Edgy, announced at the end of the post game radio show:
]The New York Mets today acquired lefthanded pitcher Dave Williams from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league righthanded pitcher Robert Manuel. Williams, 27, was acquired by the Cincinnati Reds in the off-season from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Sean Casey and cash.

In eight starts with Cincinnati this season, Williams was 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA. In 40.0 innings, he allowed 54 hits, 34 runs, 32 earned, with 16 walks and 16 strikeouts. On May 20th, in his fifth season in the majors, Williams was designated for assignment.

Doesn't say anything about whether he has been added to the 40 man roster. But if he was DFAd that many days ago, he's already passed through waivers and can probably be sent directly to Norfolk without having to be added to the 40-man.

Lima time again, Adams released and Bell DFA.

Gwreck

Bell was optioned down. Adams was the DFA.

Lima might be a relief option. Maine will get another start before the break. It all depends on how Pedro feels.

Frayed Knot
Jul 04 2006 06:05 PM

Yeah, I'm going under the assumption that this move is in response to the 6-games-in-the-next-5 days scenario - and presumably all of it w/o Pedro - rather than something more permanent. Lima may get a start in addition to Maine come this weekend rather than instead of.
After the break we go to the opposite extreme with 3 games over 8 days so it's probable that this is a one-shot deal for Lima no matter how he pitches.

The announcement many have been waiting for:
]Henry Owens - S - Mets

Mets recalled RHP Henry Owens from Double-A Binghamton.
It was originally reported that Heath Bell was being recalled to replace Pedro Martinez, but he remains in the minors and Owens is now with the big club. The 27-year-old Owens will be making his major league debut after posting a 1.01 ERA and a 51/8 K/BB ratio in 25 innings for Binghamton. He has a chance to be a setup man if his arm holds up. Gwreck

If Owens stays, Lima could be sent back down after Friday's start to make room for Pelfrey.

Rockin' Doc
Jul 06 2006 10:21 PM

I like Gwreck's thinking.

Frayed Knot
Jul 06 2006 10:29 PM

I think that's probably the thinking.
With 2 rooks going on Saturday we'll have lots of need for pen work but then with only 3 games in 8 days once action ends on Friday, we'll have little need for extra starters.

So essentially Lima & Owens have replaced Pedro & Bell, then Pelfrey can replace Lima.
I was thinking they could re-call Bell since we do have a DL situation but they're back-dating Petey's DL stint to before Bell was sent down meaning they can't do that. So unless there's a NEW injury, Bell can't come up until 10 days after his demotion (iow, after the break).

They've also made it clear that Pelfrey's call is a one shot deal.
I suppose that's always subject to change - but again, there are so few game after Sunday that Pelfrey would be better off back in Bingo or Norfolk.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Kansas City Royals sent Ruben Gotay to the New York Mets for Jeff Keppinger in a swap of minor league infielders Wednesday.

Gotay will be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk and Keppinger will play at Triple-A Omaha.

The 23-year-old Gotay was hitting .264 with nine home runs and 43 RBI for Omaha this season. The switch-hitting second baseman played 130 games for Kansas City in the past two years, batting .242 with six homers and 45 RBI.

Gotay's uncle, Julio Gotay, played in the majors with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, California and Houston from 1960-69.

The 26-year-old Keppinger hit .299 with two homers and 26 RBI for Norfolk. The second baseman played 33 games for the Mets in 2004, hitting .284 with three home runs and nine RBI.

Starting to take shape

With Pedro Martinez back in the rotation, manager Willie Randolph finally provided the sequence of starters for the one-time-around, six-man rotation. Following Martinez are Orlando Hernandez and Glavine on Saturday and Sunday against the Braves, Mike Pelfrey and Steve Trachsel (each on eight days' rest) against the Marlins in Miami on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Martinez on Thursday in Miami.

Randolph reiterated John Maine will get another start. So unless Glavine is pushed back and doesn't start against the Phillies on Aug. 4, Maine will go at least nine days without starting.

From Mets.com

]

Milledge is batting .277 with seven home runs, a .453 slugging percentage and 35 RBIs in 278 at-bats with Triple-A Norfolk. He batted .233 with a .419 slugging percentage, three home runs and 12 RBIs in 86 at-bats while with the Mets from May 30-June 30.

His immediate availability to the Mets may be an issue because was ejected from Norfolk's game on Sunday night and may face discipline.

I'm assuming somewhat here, but if you spend too much time out of your chair these days, Steve tends to jump in.

My thinking is that Duaner gets to retain the Tug McGraw Memorial Chair during his DL stint, that such things come with your tenure as long as you remain with the team. Chad Bradford was a little miffed and said, "I get people out, throwing like a girl, 30 miles per hour slower than Mike Pelfrey, what do I have to do to get that title?" and I said "Wear an octopus on your head, goggles on your face, throw your glove at the ball, and get smashed up in the midst of an awesome season." So he was cool with Duaner keeping the designation.

The thing that makes this presumption sketchy is Marty Noble's report:
"Milledge's immediate availability to the Mets may be an issue because was ejected from Norfolk's game Sunday night and may face discipline. The International League is investigating the incident in which the 21-year-old outfielder was ejected in the first inning by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook.

Milledge had taken exception to a called third strike. He argued with the umpire, threw down his bat and approached Estabrook. One report said Milledge bumped the umpire and that Estabrook backtracked to regain his balance as Norfolk manager Ken Oberkfell ran to intercede.

The Mets' Minor League department at Shea Stadium said it was unaware of a bumping incident, but the International League office is reviewing the situation and awaiting delivery of a videotape of it. The Mets wouldn't be obligated to recognize any discipline imposed by the International League."

Edgy, great job as usual.
But shouldn't you have said Perez was "optioned" to Norfolk instead of "assigned"?
"Assigned" technically means he would have to pass through waivers in order to be recalled. I believe he had been optioned by the PIrates earlier this season, so he is still in an option year.

It comes from watching several generations of GMs of many teams lose players because they didn't know the option rules. I think that's the way one of the Mets' GMs lost a player and ended up having to trade him. (I forget the details. Izzy? Endy the first time around?)

I've seen the evolution of the rules over a long period of time.

First, a player could be kept in the minors for four years before they had to be added to the 40 man roster.

Then it was three years.

Once you could only option a 40 man roster player three TIMES from the 25 man before they had to be put on waivers. Teams usually optioned when the squads were pared down in the spring and only recalled them in September.

Nowadays, a player has three option YEARS, and a team can send down/ bring up a player an almost unlimited number of times during those three years. (The rule should be named the Heath Bell rule)

I also remember the first bonus baby rules, under which the player signed had to be kept on the 25 man roster for a full year, before they could be optioned for seasoning, or be exposed to waivers. Some players in that category included (IIRC) Koufax, Brooks Robinson, Clemente (lost) and Killebrew.

Then, you could keep one bonus baby and option only one first yeat player (Cleon Jones was one of two Mets under that rule, the other four were exposed to waivers and none claimed. I think the other may have been Kevin Collins).

There may have been some other changes to the rules durng that time span, but I think that captured the significant ones.

The New York Mets today recalled lefthanded pitcher Royce Ring from Norfolk (AAA) of the International League and optioned righthanded pitcher Mike Pelfrey to the Tides. Ring will wear uniform #43 and will be available for tonight's game at Florida.
Ring, 25, was 2-1 with 10 saves and a 2.97 ERA in 34 games for Norfolk. In 36.1 innings, he allowed 28 hits, 13 runs, 12 earned, with 15 walks and 37 strikeouts. Opponents were batting .212 against him.

Royce compiled a Tides franchise record with a 26.2 scoreless innings streak from April 19th-July 8th. During that stretch he went 2-0, was eight-for-eight in save opportunities, allowing eight hits, while issuing 11 walks and fanning 28.

The 6-0, 220-pounder was also named to the Triple-A All-Star Game and pitched a scoreless inning on July 12th at Toledo, OH.

Ring was 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 15 games for New York in 2005. In 10.2 innings, he yielded 10 hits, six runs, earned, with 10 walks and eight strikeouts.

Pelfrey, 22, went 2-1 with a 5.48 ERA in four starts with the Mets. In 21.1 innings, he surrendered 25 hits, 14 runs, 13 earned, with 12 walks and 13 strikeouts.

Is there a reason Sanchez wasn't put on the 60 day DL? Is there a limit on the DL placements?

There is a 3 person limit on the number of players that can be on the 60 day DL at one time. Players on that list do not count against a team's 40 man roster.
I think they put him on the 15 day list because they had to do something immediately in order to bring up another player, and it was done before they knew the full extent of his injuries. He can be transferred to the 60 day list if they need to add someone to the 40 man roster.

Also (and I'm open to correction here) I think IF a guy is on the 15 day dl on 1st September and you move him to the 60 day dl you can replace him with someone who wasn't on the 25 man roster on the playoff roster.

So, you could have Mike Pelfrey/Philip Humber as your Game 3 starter even if they're down in the minors on Aug 31st.

DiFelice
NEW YORK -- The New York Mets placed reserve catcher Ramon Castro on the disabled list Friday because of a strained side muscle. Catcher Mike DiFelice was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.
Castro injured himself during batting practice last weekend at Atlanta. He was hitting .239 in 37 games backing up regular Paul Lo Duca.

DiFelice batted .118 in 11 games with the Mets last season. He was hitting .277 in 39 games at Double-A Binghamton before moving up to Norfolk

(It's funny how things work. The guy was hitting .277 in a lousy 39 games with Binghamton up until a week ago. He was promoted to Norfolk only to serve as Mike Pelfrey's caddy, as he had at Binghamton, and had gotten only two at-bats in the week since he joined them. Now he's getting his luggage carried and big-league meal money.)

According to Mets.com, Duaner was transferred to the 60-day DL.

I guess that made room for DiFelice on the 40-man roster. The Mets already had Bannister, Padilla and Victor Zambrano on the 60-day DL though, and I thought the limit was 3 60-day DL slots that don't count against the 40 man limit.

Strange.

--

Ricky Ledee was signed to the 40-man roster on Tuesday, with Anderson Garcia DFAed to make room.

After Tuesday's game, Marrerro was DFAed and Ledee added to the 25-man roster.

Assuming that Duaner doesn't count against the 40, that leaves the Mets with an open spot on the 40-man roster.
