Welcome to the Big Leagues, Anderson Hernandez

Sep 17 2005 03:51 PM

The Mets have purchased the contract of Anderson Hernandez and designated Dae Sung Koo for assignment.

It's about goddamn time. This happened about twenty minutes ago.

So naturally, the start goes to ...... Cairo.

Why am I not surprised?

He's been out for a week and apparently there's concern about his wrist. He's scheduled to be in there on Tuesday. Randolph reportedtly wanted him.

I'm glad to hear that.
But with Matsui's recent good hitting, I still wonder why Cairo was in there today.

Any info from Willie on that?

We're really jonesing to get Randolph.

Matsui has a strain of his hamstring, which is what precipitated the callup in the first place.

Welcome Anderson, he's wearing # 1, saw him in the dugout today going over signs with Manny Acta, maybe we'll see him play this weekend.

and now instead of calling him up in july or august and hopefully having ~200 ABs to show us what he can do we get to see him for 2 weeks in which he probably won't start much and will therefore not give us enough information to know if we want to go forward with him in 2006.

good job mets :/

Well at least he's playing now as opposed to not playing.

A guy can make an impression in two weeks, even with only a few ABs. We all know that it wouldn't mean much, really, because of sample size, but impressions last, be they good or bad. This is his chance and he needs to make the most of it because he may not get another. That's not fair, but that's how it goes.

MK and I kept telling the kid to get his first major league hit yesterday.

We wish he listened to us.

On the UMDB popularity rankings list, both the top guy and the bottom guy have the last name of Hernandez.

If you take a look at an alphabetical listing of all players, both the first guy and the last guy have the first name of Don.

As Marv Albert might say, it's "wild and wacky."

Anderson Hernandez waited his entire life for this moment, to hear his name being read by a Major League public address announcer as part of a Major League lineup

Yesterday, the lineups were read by some kid who won a contest, 40 minutes before gametime because the Mets had to run a string of promotional ceremonies between 12:30 and 1:10.

Granted, Hernandez probably had other things on his mind, but it seemed, talk about Irony City, rather minor league.

No matter. 20 years from now, his memory will make it sound like his name was read by John Facenda.
